My hiring reel seems to have struck a nerve.
And looking at the people reaching out, I think there's a bigger story here: the linear career ladder is dead.
We're getting MIT students applying for marketing roles, senior consultants looking to move into product management, and machine learning PhDs already pitching ideas for the next physiological areas DUSQ should explore.
And I find that fascinating.
This wasn't how hiring looked when I started NakhreWaali 10 years ago. Hiring was basically a CV-to-job-description matching exercise.
But DUSQ is being built at the intersection of hardware, neuroscience, engineering, consumer behaviour and design. The most interesting people often come from the intersections of these disciplines, not from within one of them.
Last year, when I was hiring our first intern, Upasana almost didn't fill out the application because she thought her academic and editorial experience had no place at a hardware startup. I told her to apply anyway.
A year later, she's a full-time employee and the right hand of both Dr Siddhant Bhargava and me in the Founders' Office. She works across functions, departments and problems — most of which weren't even part of her original job description.
My advice to her then, and to everyone applying now: the experience that makes you look like an unconventional candidate is the very thing that makes you an interesting hire. It could be your unfair advantage. Own it.
